ParticipantI agree with St Michael (cool name as it is my husbands! Though not the St bit!) There was only ever one demon. The voices it came out with were just to confuse and demorilize. I also think that Damians father died when he was young. He was probably an immigrant who was deeply religious like his wife. Maybe had aspirations to be a priest himself but couldnt because he had to support his family so couldnt follow that path. Possibly died when Damian was 10 or so and passed on his beliefs and desires to Damian who entered the priesthood as a way of carrying on his fathers dream. Possibly why he became a psychiatrist as maybe he felt that the calling to priesthood was based on his Fathers wants rather than his own. His Mother probably encouraged him and was obviously of the mind that the man is the head of the house etc etc. With her husbands passing, she transferred her devotion to her son. Her later life obviously revolved around Damian but also her husbands memory which gives credence to her refusal to leave her apartment and area that she lived in. I feel I shall start babbling and repeating myself soon so I will pass back to you guys!

ParticipantDear Jenny,
Damian was actually a typical guy whom is happy living with parents. Of course, is not bad to live with dad and mom, but he apparently was a sucessfull scientist attending J.Hopkins and Harvard. Independently of the demon’s hands, Damien decided for the reason which Ghetto and Gainsville commented in this forum: because its love to the faith, vows of poorly.
Nevertheless, the person of Damien is in some extent a reflect of the Blatty life. Damien loved so much their mom. And he loved so much his passion for the religion.
For example; on the scene:
DO IT AGAIN, demon(Reagen) reply: AT TIME…
Damien wanted a SECOND TIME of such “miracle”.
OF COURSE, if you see somedoby to move objects without touch it, what you can thing? It is a miracle? If you are a religious people, naturally it is!
If you are doing a PhD in string-theories, let’s say in MIT or NYU,
OF COURSE, you never believe it that!!
The hypothesis, that should be discussed, is that DAMIEN was(perhaps) a perfect idiot to believe on exorcisms
and demons.
On the other hand, the problems of faith as just pointed out by Grainville,
and Ghetto, were enough to put down the Damien spirit.
So far, is clear the fact of faith problems. However, I do not founded a logic explanation of the Damien’s dreams,
where there appears the falling medal.
I have the felling that Damien’s mom, had something to do with the deamon. It is only a speculation, please.
I am looking for a reasonable interpretation of Damien’s dreams, no more.May 19, 2006 at 11:59 PM #14719St. Michael
ParticipantHey Heli, while I respect everyone’s opinions at Captain Howdy’s forum, I really don’t understand what you mean but I can tell you this, Damien Karris was a priest first. The church sent him to schools to study to be a psychiatrist.

ParticipantI am not sure that I understand quite what you mean Heli. I am just speculating on what I feel Damians father was like, whether he was a priest himself or not. (I think not). And his Mothers reasons for being the way she was with Damian and her life.

ParticipantJust an idea, but I am wondering if the falling medal in Damians dream was a kind of symbolic prophesy. Remember as he was telling the demon to ”come into me”, it only came in when it had ripped off his medallion. Maybe it was the demon who was kinda inside his head and sending him these thoughts. A priest probably feels a little naked without his roman collar, maybe Damian felt that way about his medallion. He was suffering with his faith anyway and the demon knew how to make priests doubt. Possibly thats why it meant so much for Father Dyer to have it cos he knew how much the medallion represented to him. Does that make sense?

ParticipantI know that the medal makes it’s way through out the film. Merrin has it in the beginning. We see it falling to the ground in Karris dream. Then it’s pulled from his neck at the end by Reagan. Am I missing any?
I can see it “falling” in his dream and being “yanked off” his neck at the end of the exorcism, but I don’t think it links because, again, in the dream it’s falling. We never see it being pulled from Damien’s neck. So I would assume that maybe the falling of the medal in his dream would symbolize his falling out of ‘faith’ in Christ.
I also think that it wasn’t really that much for the demon to pull it from his neck (it didn’t burn Reagan’s hand when she touched it so I think the demon could of possessed Karris at any moment), but at the same time it could also mean how the demon yanked the faith, cause you need that to perform a successful exorcism, right from Karris by tormenting him about this mother. Hope I made some sense!May 23, 2006 at 11:59 PM #12716nothinglikethesun
ParticipantDoes anyone know anything about Damien’s father? Thank-you.

ParticipantDamien Karras’ father was not a priest in the traditional secular sense. In other words, Damien wouldn’t exist without the union between his father and mother. I am not saying the word “couldn’t,” and there’s a big difference.
Alas, we can turn to Sofia and ask what Blatty wrote about Karras’ father.
