ParticipantWell Blatty says there was at least 20 minutes deleted from the original cut. Friedkin used to say only about 5. 11 was added into TVYNS…
I think the dialogue of Chris naming the clay bird may have been filmed. Just the way the scene is cut, it seems as if there could have been more there. The screen tests with Ellen and Linda were of that scene so at some point there must have been more dialogue.
Marcel Vercoutere recalls filming an ending to the spiderwalk in which Regan actually bites Sharon’s ankle so hard that her face is covered in blood. Although this was from 1991… so I think his memory was just vague and he was actually referring to the spiderwalk later added into TVYNS (which further proves that it wasn’t CGI blood).
I’m sure there’s a few more bits and pieces. Hope to God we see some of it on the Blu-ray!!

It’s in Chris’ bedroom, Ceru. 🙂 She let Regan sleep in her bedroom that night. In the novel, she returns Rags to her own room after investigating the attic.
Ah, so it is! My mistake. Shoulda known by the wallpaper 😉
Still, typical of Warner’s to use a still that you don’t see in the movie. As for Kinderman’s conversation with Chris, instead of just seeing his face as she opens the door, I guess it would’ve disrupted the flow of Karras going up to the room and seeing… well, y’know.
But it does sorta explain why it took so long for Chris and Kinderman to get to Regan’s room.

Are there other scenes that could be included? As far as I know we have: Washington, spiderwalk 2, Kinderman-Chris, Chris-Regan (read above) …
There’s also the ‘funny noises/missing dress’ scene. The stills prove that it was filmed. In the novel, Regan is standing in the middle of her bedroom silently staring up at the ceiling:
“What are ya doin?” Chris asked her, hunting for the dress. It was a pale- blue cotton. She had bought it the week before, and remembered hanging it in the closet.
“Funny noises,” said Regan. “it has stopped now.”
“I know. We’ve got friends.”
Regan looked at her. “Huh?”
“Squirrels, honey. Squirrels in the attic.” Her daughter was squeamish and terrified of rats. Even mice upset her.
The hunt for the dress proved fruitless.
“See, Mom, it’s not there.”
“Yes, I see. Maybe Willie picked it up with the cleaning.”
“It’s gone, Mom!”
“Yeah, well, put on the navy. It’s pretty.”August 10, 2010 at 3:58 PM #22892hammer horror
ParticipantThanks Sofia…. do you know when this scene should have come in the movie?

ParticipantI am very stoked to get my hands on this release as are we all. I pre ordered as soon as it became available on Amazon.
I think that many fans here will be seeing this blu ray and thinking of the first time they saw it in the theater. It will be epic. Blu ray releases of old favorites of mine have almost always revealed more about the film then I remembered.
It looks like the transfer is being done well……crosses fingers

ParticipantRunning times for the special features:
“Filming Exorcist” documentary (40 min)
“Exorcist Locations” (10 min)
“Exorcist: Different Versions” (10 min)
“Fear of God” documentary (77 min)
Interview Gallery (12 min)
Dir.Cut + Theatrical Cut Trailers/Spots (10 min)I’m a little disappointed that the “Different Versions” only goes for 10 mins.
That means there probably won’t be much outtake footage.
But it does look like the Fear of God could possibly include the
Mercedes Mccambridge footage since it’s listed as being 4 minutes
longer…August 11, 2010 at 8:30 AM #22897Jason Stringer
KeymasterFilming Exorcist and Exorcist Locations are the two features I am looking forward to the most.

According to the order of events in the novel, it’s supposed to follow the scene when Regan takes a cookie from a jar and runs off with it.
Oh, Ju, thanks for writing the dialogues!

ParticipantAh, yes, the spider walk scene and what we know now:
1. The original and first-ever published version assembled from “all the found footage … outtake footage” by Mark Kermode and Nick Jones for Mark Kermode’s BBC – The Fear of God – 25 Years of The Exorcist documentary included on The Exorcist (25th Anniversary Special Edition)in 1998.
2. The bloody CGI spider walk version in The Exorcist: The Version You’ve Never Seen (now entitled, The Exorcist: Extended Director’s Cut) released in 2000. The now-defunct URL for “Exorcist Faqs by William Friedkin,” Friedkin clearly states: “We restored everything we had that was complete in both sound and picture. The spider walk had to be digitally restored for the new release.†Friedkin continues, “Now with digital technology, we have been able to make it look convincing. There was no alternate version of this shot.â€
From a USA Today live-chat article, “The Exorcist’ 25 years later: Director William Friedkin,†Friedkin answers another spider walk question:
“On oakland ca: hi just wanted to ask how did you guys come up with the spider walk she did in the movie just released and was it hard? by the way thank you for rerelewasing [sic] it i [sic] still love it alot [sic] it was one of all time favorites thank you. april”
William Friedkin: “And thanks to you, April!
“The spider walk comes from reports of similar occurences [sic] in demonically possessed people. I cut it when the film was first released because this was one of those effects that did not work as well as others, and I was only able to save it for the re-release with the help of computer graphic imagery.â€
Will we know about the reality of the use of CGI or the reality of filmed versions with fake blood? Well, if we see something about the use of CGI used for the spider walk, it’s obvious. If we see behind-the-scenes photos or clips of the filming of bloody versions of the spider walk, that’s obvious, too. If the nothing exists about the spider walk on the BR special features, I side with Friedkin’s responses coupled with Kermode’s comments to believe that CGI blood worked its way into that scene. I can only hope I am wrong and get a new thrill from this thriller.
In time … in time.

ParticipantI really need to buy a Blu-Ray player. So many great Blu-Ray discs have been being released lately with wonderful extra features and I won’t get to see them because I only have a VHS and DVD player.

ParticipantOf course now that I have the equipment to watch blu-rays correctly, I’m seeing the 3D push in just about every store. I’m getting tired of the changes to the newer technology that’s only just begun. What’s next? Willy Wonka’s incredible shrinking machine of live actors? 🙂
