Jagged
ParticipantYou must feel like you are bashing your head against the wall sometimes! I admire your tenacity.
Seems to me we have survived losing the forum before, we’ll survive it again. It won’t be nearly as much a loss as when the original went.
It needs a better layout anyway, this one is to narrow (especially on widescreen) and can we have an easy to find login button?November 18, 2008 at 11:59 PM #21402Jason Stringer
KeymasterMost definitely will include an easier login method with the new layout. Will also consider the width/formatting of the next forum, thanks Jagged!

ParticipantCap, are you losing just the forum content? I am guessing you are migrating away from WordPress? I agree with Jagged, after the last idiot hijacked the site, we can live with a new home. 😉
Thanks for the heads-up!

KeymasterI will not be migrating away from WordPress. Only the forum plugin will have to change as WordPress progresses forward, there are no forum programmers keeping it working against wordpress update releases.
I’ve spent a LOT of time and money to ensure hacking won’t happen again – and the site is backed-up every 6 hours. 😉

ParticipantThanks for your hard work on the site. Is there no way to block WordPress from updating? Would that not advert the problem?

KeymasterI’d prefer to stick with WordPress updates, mainly for security reasons, but also for compatibility and features for users. 🙂 Thanks Witch.

ParticipantPersonally I’d like to see a PHPBB/V Bulletin style forum come back. I know there are ways to integrate PHPBB with WordPress (I’m currently looking into that for my own site).
I understand though that could be too time consuming.

KeymasterYou’re right Justy, WordPress provide such a plugin and I’m looking int that at the moment. I think many users here over a period of time have expressed preference for a PHPBB/Vbuletin board.

ParticipantI reckon you should install phpbb3 like I have done for TNC.com. It’s free, easy to install, stable & secure, and very easy to add awesome modifications to:
http://www.theninthconfiguration.com/forum/
Just by editing a few files I’ve added the capability of viewing the last post on the first page, avatars in the member list, who’s viewing what thread, etc. vBulletin is great, but expensive, as you know (hello, 2003-2004 era!)

KeymasterThe problem with an off-site forum, Ryan, is that your current login won’t work. Everyone would need two logins – one for the site to comment on posts, and another for the forum. I’d prefer to keep it simple and have one login take care of everything.
There are phpbb forums developed to be plugin to this blog software (WordPress) which I am currently testing.

ParticipantCool, good luck!

ParticipantI agree Captain. One website one login.

ParticipantCap, when you choose the forum software, isn’t there a version that will enable you to migrate the current forum to the new one? I hope so.
November 28, 2008 at 11:59 PM #21451Jason Stringer
Keymasterfatherbowdern, as I mention at the start of this thread, the new forum software I run with is very unlikely to be able to migrate these posts across because it will use a vastly different database. But I will explore the possibilities!
This forum we are using now will not disappear. I will leave it here, locked, for referencing.
Captain.

ParticipantCap,
I do clearly remember your original post when I wrote my last response above. However, as this blog expanded, I had a little hope that there was some type of “migration system” that would help because I’ve seen it done before on others sites (and, no, I have no idea how since you’ve educated me here on the cons). I know you’ll explore the possibilities. I just keep thinking of how much folks have posted in their blogs with video, sound, and pictures, etc., and those are the pieces that would be important to incorporate into one new site.
Perhaps we could have a place “store” our stuff under one of the convenient subheadings? You can play judge and jury as to whether they are pulled. (For example, Jason’s “wire catch” in the scene with Regan floating above the bed.)
Thanks and keep it up!
