Check out the links section. I believe there was a famous exorcism performed in Iowa but Iowa was never mentioned in the movie.

I was wondering if anyone knew anything truly factual about the exorcism. Every where the information is changed in someway as to dates and ages and all that. They said they didnt want her to ever find out it was her. It seems weird they would wait 50 years to make a movie about this extreme happing. And does anyone know why they chose Earling, Iowa?

Was the exorcist movie not based on the one in iowa? It was based on a book?

He researched a few exorcisms including the Iowa exorcism which has many similarities to the more extreme elements of “The Exorcist”.

The case that actually got Blatty interested on the subject was of a boy from Cottage City, Maryland (The actual exorcism was performed in St. Louis) that was reported in The Washington Post.
