ParticipantUsually three:
Halloween
Halloween III: The Season of the Witch (which I think is sadly underrated and misunderstood, I have plenty of explanation why)
and of course The Exorcist.Every once in a year (of course) it can be changed around with The Shining, Suspiria, or Night of the Living Dead coming in there.
😉
By the way, Something Wicked This Way Comes is a movie I’ve been wanting to see again in years, Granville! Do you have it on DVD?

ParticipantI don’t know if they ever did a DVD release on it. It’s an old Touchstone production around the time they did Never Cry Wolf and The Journey of Natty Gann.

ParticipantI just remember Jason Robards being incredibly compassionate in the film for his character whereas Jonathan Pryce, on the other end of the spectrum, was incredibly creepy as Mr. Dark. 😉

ParticipantI agree. Robards is the older, aging father with a bad heart – conditions with which the evil Pryce (Mr. Dark) tempts Robards. The bad guys are kind of like spiritual vampires – they suck energy from human pain, and they cause human pain by wickedly granting – in a bleak, unfulfilling way – human desires. As Mr. Dark says, “We butter our plain bread with delicious pain.” Robard’s compassion and wisdom contrast nicely with Pryce’s evil, as you mentioned.

Participantgranville1, I love The Innocents! But it’s so disturbing that I hardly watch it. “Oh look – a lovely spider! And it’s eating a butterfly!”

ParticipantThe Innocents is an excellent film! One of the most atmospheric and best photographed horror films of the day. Very classic ghost story with a hint of demonic-like possession. Deborah Kerr gives an amazing performance, is at her most beautiful and motherly; all combined with a chilling score! 😀

Participant“Season of the Witch”! Tommy Lee Wallace’s chilling entry in the genre… and a perfect fit for Halloween.

ParticipantIn 58 days, 3 hours, 9 minutes, 44 seconds I will be watching The Exorcist. Don’t worry, I didn’t do this equation myself. Looked it up 😉

ParticipantUsually the first Halloween.
After that I watch any of the Hammer movies and the old Universal movies.

ParticipantGreat idea for a thread by the way.
I always make a point of buying at least one of the titles that made the DPP’s list during the ‘Video Nasties’ scare at Halloween because I seem to enjoy them… for all the wrong reasons I’m sure! So I’ll always end up watching that.
I watch ‘The Exorcist’ naturally, try and squeeze in something from Hammer (generally one of the Christopher Lee Draculas) or if I’ve bought another film, I’ll watch that and end with ‘Halloween.’
This year I’m actually going over one of my friend’s houses with a section of my collection which makes a change as I usually watch the films by myself.

ParticipantThanks, danwphibes. To add to my list, Dracula (1931) , The Amityville horror (7o’s), and Beetlejuice. I always watch alone. Scarier, I think. 😉

ParticipantI just watched 13 Ghosts (the new one)after a few years. Not a bad little flick..
October 29, 2007 at 11:59 PM #19383danwphibes
ParticipantNot a problem Blizzi 😉
Dracula (1931) is an absolute classic, though I was given a VHS copy as a birthday present a few years ago that had this new score throughout it… I wasn’t impressed. Don’t know if anyone else has come across that version?
Beetlejuice – what can I say? “Learn to throw your voice, fool your friends, fun at parties!”
Etrigan69 – funnily enough, I was thinking about the remake of 13 Ghosts the other day – in my opinion a rare good remake. I also liked the new approach to ‘House on haunted hill.’ My little confession is that in all my years of watching horror films, I actually jumped when watching the remake of ’13 Ghosts’ 🙂
