ParticipantIt wasn’t a mini-statue of Pazuzu that Regan made, but a piece of clay. Regan would shape things with clay, and some of those rested on her window pane. When she (that is to say, the demon inside her) killed Dennings, she pushed him out of the window, knocking out some clay figures. That’s why it was significant that Kinderman found it.
It’s a clue that leads to the killer’s identity.January 25, 2007 at 11:59 PM #16417Jaygon
ParticipantReally?I must re-watch that peice.I always thought that the strange peice of clay looked very like thestatue of Pazuzu

ParticipantThe book strongly poses the question: “Was Regan posessed or was she faking it?”
I think that this was one of those instances to make us wonder if she did it herself!!
That aside, I’d say it is one of those things we are not supposed to know,Just like how Kinderman found the mini-statue of Pazuzu that Regan made at the bottom of the steps, the desecrations in the church and the shadows in the window.January 26, 2007 at 11:59 PM #16424Benocles_Czar
ParticipantFriends,
Also, let us remember back to the final scene in THE NINTH CONFIGURATION. The cross mysteriously appeared in the back of the car, an indication that there was an afterlife. So if it wasn’t Regan, or any human hand for that matter, it could’ve been an angel…
Cheers & God Bless

ParticipantHave to say that one makes the most sense. She kept it for protective purposes and the demon let her keep it for immoral ones. I know it may sound obvious but have you noticed her face during the masturbation scene? Yes, she looks like she is in a lot of pain but she also looks at the cross as if she is horrified. Do you know what I mean. She had it to protect her but the demon is making a mockery of that protection and she is mortally ashamed at what she is doing. And not just for obvious reasons. Its like she realizes she cant help herself at all no matter what she does. I am now thinking that maybe the demon nudged her into getting the cross to make her feel safe so he could do this to her later and sink deeper into her.

ParticipantNever thought of that before………..Regan MUST have sneaked out of her room and got it!

ParticipantRegan, that’s a great, compelling take, and given your “no straps” observation you’d posted elsewhere, this would make sense.

ParticipantI always wondered about this myself.
One thing to remember…the Chris first discoveres the crucifix under Regans pillow. She takes it out of her bedroom, and goes down stairs to ask if Sharon placed it in Regan’s bedroom. During this scene, Kinderman comes to the house…..Chris placed the crucifix on the table, and then has the discussion with Kinderman in the kitchen about Burkes death.
I believe the audience is supposed to assume that during Chris & Kinderman’s kitchen coversation, Regan snuck downstairs to the living room, and took the crucifix back to her bedroom.
The following scene after Kinderman leaves the house, we have Regan masterbating with the crucifix….that’s my take on the mystery.

ParticipantBlatty says that Regan had been exposed to religious ideas: 1) she had read material about possession; 2) she had desecrated the church and typed the blasphemous altar card (tho’ in a possessed or semi-possessed state); she knew that Willie and Karl were of Catholic background; she lived in predominantly Catholic Georgetown and thus presumably had seen her share of priests and nuns.
Therefore she had at least a background in understanding the meaning of the crucifix. She may well have sneaked it into her room as a protective talisman. Or, the demon, anticipating full control and the eventuality of self-rape with the crucifix, may have directed Regan to procure the cross for future use.

Participantyou know something just occured to me I think maybe when reagen was still semi possessed she put the cross under the pillow herself so that it could protect her from the evil she felt within herself. She was probably real scared. What do you all think about my theory? Thank you all for sharing with me your replys to this and all of my other posts as well!

ParticipantWow, it makes Regan to be like a ghost drifting and wondering around the house.
Chilling…(:
Loved the theory^_^February 13, 2007 at 11:59 PM #16533Jason Stringer
KeymasterI like this theory, too. Adds a creepy sense of possessed Regan existing outside of her “no straps” bedroom.

ParticipantIve just replied a post similar to this,I must be eager too get my views across. 🙂
Anyhoos…
I like to think that Regan found the crucifix as she was demonacally desocrating the church early one moring.
And therefore scuttles down the stairs(probably right on her mothers coat tails)to retreive the crucifix as she and kinderman disscuss denning`s death.
Also later in the film when Regan is suppossed to be secured in her bed,we see her shadow moving around her room…which I find a little freaky.

ParticipantAre you all INSANE?NO one not even Reagan…Put the cross in her room, nor under pillow! It appeared just like all the other spirits…Forgive me,but Reagan Teresa Mcneil had no idea what a crucifix was.She had no apparent religious back ground…..She was an innocent Child! She only knew what her momma said!Think about it

KeymasterOct31, agreed – it was possessed Regan (aka Pazuzu) who ventured the cross. Not Regan herself.
