KeymasterYes, (presumably) it was Regan. Kinderman spots Regan moving around her room, despite Chris saying “She’s heavily sedated…”. Seeing Regan move around her bedroom contradicts this. The scene just help to illustrate that Kinderman doesn’t really believe Chris.

ParticipantI always thought it was the shadow of Pazuzu, which appeared throughout the film!

ParticipantNot really sure is there is a definitive answer. The shape has a rather ghostlike movement to it so it could have been Regan, Pazuzu or something else entirely. I think it was just to show that Kinderman didn’t trust Chris like the Captain said.

ParticipantCouldn’t it have been Chris or Sharon, checking the window after or before checking up on Regan? Lotsa different possibilities. I do like, however, the idea of it being Regan; much more interesting.

ParticipantThats the great and creepy thing about it, is that you never know.

ParticipantI always thought it was Regan in possessed state so to speak. It always appeared to me to be a ‘hey look at me, I can get out of bed and walk around and I did kill Burke Dennings , so there’! Just the proof that she did it. Well the demon anyways! You know what I mean!

ParticipantI’ve always thought it was Regan as well. You could chock it up to another universal hullicination that Merrin and Karras keep having during the exorcism; done just to confuse Kinderman and fueling his doubt to interfere with Chris.

ParticipantIf you consider “Legion: Exorcist III” official Exorcist cannon, the Gemini Killer explains to Kinderman how his soul entered Karras at the moment of Karras’s death.
“…(sic) certain parties were expelled…certain parties were not pleased…”
In the Exorcist, after Karras sprinkles the unblessed holy water onto Reagan, the demons cry out:
“GIVE US TIME…let her die!”
And before:
“…in here, with us…”
As for Merrin’s comment, he may be referring to the group of demons as one whole, a one minded operating unit if you will.
Also, I’ve always considered Merrin’s statement to be his response to the young, doubting, faith losing, Harvard grad, psychiatric priest’s view and scientific approach to Reagan’s multiple personality disorder.
Also, the very concept of “Legion: for we are many” is so prevalent within the films, novels, the Bible, and Blatty himself.

ParticipantYes…………..I always wondered why she did react so violently to the tap water??
January 25, 2007 at 11:59 PM #16414Jenny
ParticipantI always thought of Legion being one being made up of the strength of many. An evil person dies and his soul joins on with Legion. So whilst there are many they embody one spirit.

ParticipantAh!But are there many demons in Regan???
She seemed to portray the personaly of Dennings after she killed him but as Merrin states “There is only one”.
I have been trying to debate this out on another thread!January 25, 2007 at 11:59 PM #16400ManInKhakiExorcist
ParticipantIs this scene, with Kinderman noticing, in the book?

ParticipantThere are many demons in Reagan. Who knows? It may be one of ’em taking a stroll!
Ever notice there’s no commentery on this particular scene? Friedkin, Blatty, and Kermode have said nothing.January 26, 2007 at 11:59 PM #16418cappy
ParticipantThe demon reacted that way to fool doubting Karras. In order to make him think she’s not possessed but mentally ill.

ParticipantFriends,
Though this might be slightly verging off the topic, to answer Jenny’s query, I can shed some light on the “Legion” issue (mostly because I discuss it in my essay for my forthcoming book on Blatty’s works).
Anyway, in Luke 8:27–33 (from the Bible), there is a story of great interest, of Jesus confronting a possessed man, who has seemingly been able to control the unholy host that resides in his body. The instantaneous fear shown by the demon is remarkable . As it is written:
“When Jesus stepped ashore, he was met by a demon-possessed man from the town. For a long time this man had not worn clothes or lived in a house, but had lived in the tombs. When he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell at his feet, shouting at the top of his voice, “What do you want from me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you, don’t torture me!†For Jesus had commanded the evil spirit to come out of the man. Many times it had seized him, and though he was chained hand and foot and kept under guard, he had broken his chains and had been driven by the demon to solitary places. Jesus asked him, “What is your name?†“Legionâ€, he replied, because many demons had gone into him. And they begged him repeatedly not to order them to go into the Abyss. A large herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside. The demons begged Jesus to let them go into them, and he gave them permission. When the demons came out of the man, they went into the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and was drownedâ€.
I make note of the above passage, as it is this very passage, which not only planted the seed for the Exorcist sequel Legion, but it is also echoed of by Blatty in The Exorcist:
“’Who is “we’ Karras probed with alert, quick interest.
‘We are quite a little group in the piglet,’ it said, nodding†[E 207]Hope that is of some interst. More on this in my essay…
🙂Cheers & God Bless
