“hello? daddy can you hear me?? well umm.. I don’t know what to say.. well uh daddy I was possessed by the devil and..”

Don’t mind me, I’m bored as shit. Anyway.. I don’t think she would have told him, as it wouldn’t be the easiest thing to tell someone (although telling people you were possessed seems to cause miracles in The Heretic).

I don’t think Chris would of said anything to him. From the movie, I got the impression that he really didn’t care to be involved with the mother or the daughter.

Captain Howdy might be seen as Regans’ “dark” or “demonic substitute” father – in fact, the book has doctors surmise that the name Howdy is related to Regan’s Dad’s name, “Howard”. But the book makes clear that Captain Howdy is truly a non-human demon, whose “fatherly” role, if any, toward Regan, was a trick to win her trust and to smooth the way to full possession.

It is true, Howdy can be derived from Howard.
    Reagen’s father was in Europe
when the possession was achieved. So, two things very incompatible.

I think thats what made it that much easier for the demon to relate and then capture Reagan. The trust factor. He succeeded. He spoke with her through the Ouija board, fed her head with bullshit, and then possessed her.

You might be right. Captain Howdy can be Regan’s fictional father

There was always that allusion to the father and his split with Chris as being a psychological motivation for the child to be acting out as opposed to being truely possessed by a demonic entity. While the scene with Chris freaking out at the opperator sort of implies dysfuntion between her & her ex there is nothing I can recall from the film or novel to back that up. He was simply unreachable as Chris herself must have been, working as she did. The girl began to seriously act out at the party Chris held for her high powered friends and she continued to draw attention to herself throughout her possession. While there was clearly a demonic possession at work here, just as with “The Omen” the intension of the filmmakers was always to allow for doubt when it came to the supernatural elements.

Doesn’t matter if you are a boy or a girl, but when your parents divorce it is tragic. Especially in the 70’s when divorce and separation was not accepted or approved. I think the demon Pazzuu, or whatever manipulated Regan, a young girl, to filling the father void of Howard. Howard was not a bad father in the book. He was not able to respond because he was on a yacht and could not get signals or whatever to make a good connection to wish Regan a HAPPY BIRTHDAY. I think the demon Pazzuu knew Regan’s weakness of not having a father figure in her life to take her over.

Do you think Chris ever told Regan’s father that she had been possessed by the devil after the first movie?

I think Granville and Kokumu got it right. “Howdy” was the name Regan used for the demon in the early stages of the possesion. When Karras did his investigation into the cases authenticity he considered possible psychological theories about the possesion, one being the similarity of Howdy and Howard. The demon was often confusing, trying to convince Karras that it wasn’t “authentic”. I believe this was Blatty’s way of throwing a wrench into the story, to raise questions. Like when Regan reacted violently to the holy water, though she must have known it wasn’t actually blessed.
