ParticipantBlatty makes clear that Karras’ poverty is related to his vocation as a Jesuit, not to his avocation as a psychiatrist. He did not have a lucrative psychiatric “business” – rather, he was a counselor to other Jesuits. Presumably the “vow of poverty” so sarcastically alluded to by Douriff in “Legion” precludes a large personal salary for Karras. Certainly Damien’s uncle shames Karras that IF Karras had been “a famous psychiatrist by now, Park Avenue, instead of this… (“this” being his mother treated in a poor ward of a hospital).
Karras’s “past problems” were in the recent past, i.e., his crisis of faith, his religious doubts, his midlife crisis, his guilt re: his mother’s poverty. His youth seems to have been fine, but his crises began with the onset of middle age.

KeymasterWell Granville, are you right in your
statements above.
I think, a movie about the history
of Damien father is needed.
This movie, should focus on the years
when he decide became Jesuit. But also, the movie must show the how and why started the problems as you said above:
crisis of faith.
I like your point of view about that. It is actually the point. Karras dreams as we saw in “The Exorcist”, gives an impression about his unfortunate crisis of faith. In Karras’s dream we can see his mother near going to the sub, as well as a medal is falling. My interpretation is twofold:
1.- He had already these kind of dreams before. Please, note that his mother and the medal falling are two things completely different, in principle.
However, I should say that both things
CAN BE LINKED.
2.- IT WAS TRUE, Karras’s mother going to the sub, means that she is going to the hell, with the deamon. Well, this conclusion is actually speculation. In additon, Karras’s problems are linked under the assumption that he had
confrontations with the deamon, before to know REAGEN.
In other words, the deamon knew in advance the “crisis of faith”, and the
deamon just try to exploit this unfortunate corner of Karras’s spirit. But, we need a movie, where Karras confront the deamon before to know reagen, and the he decide become ABSOLUTE Jesuit, astonishing his Harvard and John Hopkings collegues.
I think, this argument FITS the requierement: why the deamon knew very detailed weak parts of Karras.
Thanks Granville, for you unvaluable comments.May 11, 2006 at 11:59 PM #14589granville1
ParticipantYou’re welcome, Heli… yes, the demon was aware of Karras’s faith problems but was not expecting him (in the book) to be the exorcist. The demon was expecting Merrin, so he could defeat and/or kill him. Instead, when Damien appears before Merrin does, the demon cackles unbelievingly, “You? They sent you?!?” (or words to that effect).

Participantmy favorite scene in the movie…
Father Merrin is seated in the living room praying just before going into Reagan’s room to perform the exorcism. Chris enters places a cup of what appears to be either coffee or tea on the table in front of him.
Merrin: Thank you. Thank you very much.
Chris: You’re welcome.
Chris lights a match, watching Merrin, almost revering and at the same time eying him mysteriously. If you look at it, she’s actually kneeling at his feet.
Chris: Would you like some brandy in that, Father?”
Merrin: Well, the doctors say I shouldn’t. But thank God my will is weak.”
Merrin smiles at Chris as she takes the cup from him to add the brandy. Here is a man, an old man who all hold in the highest regards! He couldn’t be more Holier!!
a. Karris, “It’s an honor to meet you, Father.” Plus his other interactions with Merrin.
b. The brief conversation with the old priest and Chris.
c. The demon shouting out,”MERRIN!!!”
The demon at one point crys,”Fear the priest!” Not to mention how when Merrin angrly begins to bless Reagan (Merrins praying it appears is shouted out in anger), she cowers. The demon is in fact afraid.
But with that one little scene with Merrin and Chris about adding the brandy reveals that he is in fact just a man. But the others don’t see him as such. Father Merrin is worried about having brandy put in his fucking Tea/Coffee because the doctors say it isn’t good for him!!! What a powerful scene!! In my excitement, while typing this, I might have jumbled it and might not have explained myself fully but I hope you people can understand where I’m coming from.
As larger than life Merrin appears to be to present company…. he is just an old man.
To me my friends, that scene is huge!May 13, 2006 at 11:59 PM #14616Jason Stringer
Keymasterthe best scenes is when regan suck the tobillo the invited to the party of chris
so!!! when down the spider walk and persigue to chris and sharonJune 21, 2006 at 11:59 PM #15134FatherKarris
ParticipantThe Spiderwalk would definitely have to be my favourite scene. It adds so much to the movie, The things that Pazuzu makes her do that would seem impossible. Should have been kept in the movie.. It followed the book pretty well.

ParticipantA film on — and a ‘nother prequel to The Exorcist, incidentally)– Karras would naturally be an interesting thing.
But since it couldn’t involve demons, exorcisms, etc. it could be tricky to pull off with any kind of originality or scenes of real drama. Maybe not. Anyway, I think if there were such a film to be made, God and/or angels would be a MUST. Otherwise it would be a very stand-alone story even further from the original film than Dominion or Legion are perceived to be. Such a film would be a fine opporunity to realy explore the “GOOD” — to some degree — and if they opted to get supernatural about it, to a significant degree, it’s the good guys (God and angels) who oughtta appear. And not some kind of Touched By an Angel hooey, either, please.
Oh, and BLATTY would have to write it. Otherwise, since the rights belong to a certain meddling production company, it’d have an exorcism in it at the end. Blatty know’s better, and knows his characters better than anyone.
Not counting the man’s proper version of Legion (pre-Morgan Creek’s tampering), If Blatty has one more film in him, given his “up there” age, I hope “KARRAS” is it.

Ps. I’d get Jason Patric to play Karras. Or an unknown. If I had such power to choose.

ParticipantMy favorite two scenes in the film, though are:
“The message” and cutting to the taxi pulling up with Regan in close-up, possessed.
The “MERRRRIN!” scene when Merrin has arrived at the house.
And the reveal of the Pazuzu statue with Merrin gulping in shock and wind and sun actin’ all crazy.
I also adore the “face off” with the Pazuzu statue, barking dogs, and Merrin pondering. Classic.
What a fine film.

ParticipantToo many to mention! But one scene that scared the crap out of me when I first seen the film, was when Regan fell back on her bed after screaming for help and her eyes roll back showing only the whites, then her neck swells massively and the noises that come from her as she’s totally posessed by the demon.

Keymaster^^^ I agree with CliCK, that was the scenes that had me cower into my own body and think, “ooohh fuck… this might be fucked up…”. I was 14 when I first watched it.

ParticipantThere is no ‘best scene’ as the whole movie is just so incredible, a cinematic landmark so filled with sickening evil tension that it would be totally imposible for me to pick out one scene.

ParticipantI like the scene with the shrink when she grabs his his nuts. Just before that when she looks up at him. Ooh that is such a nasty look! Especially cos they hadnt really got on with the make up much. It was her, at 12 giving such an evil face. I would have run screaming if I had been the shrink!

ParticipantI would have to agree that the whole movie is so great that to pick just one scene is impossible but if I had too the scene where Regun snickers after killing Father Merrin. She is sitting on the floor and the holy water bottle is dripping and she just snickers this totally sadistic little hellish snicker that scene gets me every time
