ParticipantI would have loved more of Kinderman & the sub-plot with Karl’s dughter, like in the original script and novel. I would also have loved more talk between Karras and demon, and a longer exorcism.

KeymasterI think the film is perfect so this is NOT me wishing more was there. Friedkin’s decision to cut the Karl sub-plot was a very good one, I feel, because it would have drastically distracted from the possession which is the lifeline of the film.
If I had the choice to visit some alternate universe where magical footage existed, I would like to see more conversation between Karras and Regan possessed. Those scenes are without a doubt a highlight.

ParticipantI felt that the subplot with Karl and his daughter slowed the book down. And It’s strange that the whole “Who put the crucifix under the pillow?” was left in the film when it didn’t really add anything. Whereas in the book there’s alittle more to it (if I remember correctly).

ParticipantYep, more conversation with the Demon would be top of my list.
For me that was always where the true horror in the novel lay.May 5, 2006 at 11:59 PM #14443AlienPubicHair
ParticipantI agree with Justin. That would have been awesome.

KeymasterYeah, I think Jagged is right. The conversations between Karras and the demon in the book are pretty chilling, and they emphasize the difference between Regan’s style of speech and the demon’s. I would really like to know what Friedkin would do with it(:

ParticipantI second and third the motion for more demonic dialogue. The book’s demonic dialogue, though lurid, at least established that the invading personality was supernaturally ancient, evil, and wise. But the movie’s demon didn’t convince me of any of those qualities – more dialogue could have delineated the demon’s truly alien character.
Also, I was disappointed in the demon’s voice – granted, not as bad as in Heretic and Legion – but the book describes a booming bass male voice. As effective as Mercedes McCambridge’s vocalizations were, still the demon’s voice for me at least was far too female-sounding.

ParticipantYeah, you’re right, it would be nice if the demon’s character would be explored like the others. Than, it would be more of a thought provoking psychological thriller rather than a horror film. [demon’s playing with your mind;)]
Though I must say, I think Friedkin DID kind of conveyed that sense of ‘mad cunning’ in the movie. I’ve seen the movie before reading the book, and that’s one of the things that drove me into reading it.May 13, 2006 at 11:59 PM #14626granville1
ParticipantThanks for your comments, cappy. I like your idea of having the demon play with the audience’s mind, which could be done with the right kind of writing, e.g., the way Douriff plays with our minds in Legion, and how Hopkins plays with our minds in the Hannibal movies.

ParticipantThe one scene that springs to mind is the hypnotism scene. In the book it was much longer. All that “Do you hate her? YES” “You wish to harm her? YES” “To kill her? Yes”. When I read that part in the book it really gives me the creeps, it was a shame it was not in the film.

KeymasterYes I agree with Father Merrin about the hypnotism scene. This is one moment from the book which really stuck out (as a good read) for me. I think that is the part of teh book where Blatty REALLY hits the spot. The pacing is just perfect.

ParticipantScenes that would have been interesting to see, but glad they didn’t do as they are more effective and scarier off-camera:
– Regan’s initial and continuing interactions with “Captain Howdy”, and her possession progression
– The Church desecration. Does the book really imply that Regan did it? I always thought the possibility that Karras did it was interesting
– Burke’s murder. Again, much creepier and more effective off-camera, but I do wonder how it all went down!

ParticipantI also would have loved to see the bit when Chris talks about Regan running scared from Captain Howdy, and then she does all those weird things. That was kinda creepy..
