KeymasterI believe Damien’s father died at a young age. I reach this conclusion because of two reasons:
1 – He is still in close contact with his uncle, who was his father’s brother.
2 – His mother has something of a ‘shrine’ to Damien in her home, (the man f her life), while there seems to be a lack of any photos featuring an older male who could be her husband and Damien’s father. While there is no mention of this in the film (and I like it that way because it invites us to draw our own conclusions), I came to this conclusion based on this evidence.

ParticipantI always thought that Damien was a bastard, born out of wedlock myself. That’s why she had the shrine. Was the Uncle his Mum’s brother?
Could explain a lot of things…I don’t know of any brother-in-law that would care that much for his sister-in-law. I’d say that he was his Mother’s brother.

ParticipantDamien’s father has many names. His first one, however, was that of the Morning Star.
Oh, wait… the other Damien… 😀

KeymasterWazza – Good point. But, either way, at the sickness and eventual death of his mother, only his Uncle (no matter which side) is close by. His Father clearly must have up and left around the time Damien was born (as you suggested), or passed away.

ParticipantIt’d be interesting to find out why he joined the priesthood. Not only that but how long he was one and why didn’t he look into a transfer when he felt that he needed to be closer to his mother!

ParticipantGiving more thought into Damien’s dad. I think that Damien’s father was a respectful and hard working immigrant. He lived with his wife, loved her and raised his family in that apartment and in that part of Manhattan (the streets didn’t always look that way. The neighborhood had to be better in the old days). And I honestly feel that’s one of the reasons why Damien’s mom also didn’t want to leave. There are too many memories of her and her husbands life together attached to it. I don’t know, she looked pretty happy to me just sitting there listening to the radio. To us and Damien, yeah, it looks heartbreaking, but to Mrs. Karris….. you have to agree, she was happy.

KeymasterI think you might be on to something there. She was adament she was NOT leaving.

KeymasterActually, Damien had in some extent blame of the dead of his mother.
If it was true that the He studied at
Harvard, Jhon Hopkins, etc, then it means we are a very prestigious researcher. However he decided to be poor because HE WANTED.May 11, 2006 at 11:59 PM #14577granville1
ParticipantI’ve surmised that Blatty’s experience shaped his characterization of Karras: Blatty’s Dad walked away when Blatty was a young child – Dad just walked away one day and never came back, leaving Blatty and his Mom (Karras and his Mom) alone to fend for themselves. Both Blatty’s parents came to the U.S. on a cattle boat, poor Lebanese immigrants. Blatty describes his father as a gentle man with a Chaplinesque gait.

ParticipantKarras was not simply poor “because he wanted”. His vow of poverty which he took on entering the Jesuit order probably preceded his psychiatric degree by many years. Jesuits and most other priest, especially when they’ve taken the vow of poverty, know that they will likely not have a large bank account. Both Karras and his mother knew this as soon as he decided on the priesthood.

ParticipantI definetely don’t think Karras wanted to be poor because HE WANTED. Who wants to be poor? He is poor because he has a passion for what he is doing in life. Most artists, musicians, actors are poor most of their lives because they rarely get the noteriety that Hollywood has but the continue to work in their field because they love doing it. Most people , myself included, would rather be happy with what they are doing than making huge amounts of money in a job that they hate.

ParticipantRespect to Karras, there is still things that cannot be understand. Well, he was a poor priest. But there are a lot of difference between him and Dyer father, whom was more social, enjoying longer nights of jet-set. Well, Dyer seems to be another priest compared with Karras.
Dyer and Karras, were actually closed friends? Dyer knew the Karras’s problems? Dyer, of course, he could help him, trying put him in another direction. WAS DYER who introduced Karras to Chris, (both met in a Park, she bring dark glasses) Did know Dyer
certain experience of Karras respect to
Exorcist or Demon possession?
Why DYER TOLD TO CHRIS ABOUT KARRAS?Turning now to the Karras arrievd to the Reagen room, he asked:
-Where is Reagen?
-‘Here, with us’, Reagen said.
In despite of the fact that Merrin
could not accept the existence of several individual inside of Reagen, Karras could anticipate the presence of three independent personalities (Please, to note the night when Karras was in the Audio laboratory, listening Reagen voice) It make the suspect that Merrin
was wrong, and Karras was right.
According to this logic, we can conclude:
– 3 different personalities was living inside Reagen (as it was proved
by Karras, i.e, the scientific side)
Captain Howdy, Karras’s mother,
and an old demon who already knew details of Karras’s spirit.
– Only 1, i.e, the same demon who already fighted with Merrin, and was
waiting to him, to fight again.
Speculations inside the logic are welcome.May 14, 2006 at 11:59 PM #14635St. Michael
ParticipantGood stuff Heli. First off I don’t it’s fair to put Karris under the lamp. We caught him at a very bad time in his life. Did he feel like he was losing his faith before the events in the film? He probably did alittle. What made it worst was the fact that his mother injured herself (probably again) climbing the stairs. Everytime he came for a visit he spoke to her about ‘moving her somewhere safe where she could be taken care of’. But being the stubborn woman that she was, refused.
“This is my home and I’m not going no place.”
So if you ask me, from that moment in time, Karris had alot on his plate. So again, I don’t think it’s fair to judge his character that he wasn’t as easy going as Dyer. If you ask me, Father Dyer just might act the same if he was going through a similar crisis. If you wanna really dig deep, Karris did smoke, like Dyer. He drank (but that could of been because of his mother situation, but then again, he was swigging from the bottle and if you’ve never drank before, thats a pretty difficult thing to do. Alcohol burns going down!!) and last, he was a bit of a slanger. In other words, his brief interaction/conversation with Dyer sounded typical guy chatter. To make a long story short, I think Karris was just as fun loving as Dyer (maybe not as much) but he was very professional when it came to his job.Karris in the room with Reagan. Hmmm, I don’t think there is anything to be read with the whole “3 different personalities that Reagan has manifested’ because it’s like Father merrin said (who has tackled this demon before) and I quote “There is only ONE!”
1. Captain Howdy was created by the demon to make it easier to develope a relationship with Reagan. He wanted at first to develope a friendship. Someone she could talk to.
2. The voice and imagery of Karris’s mother that the demon played off was to destroy the young priest’s spirit as well as destroy the rite of exorcism.
For the record, these observations are just my humble opinions. -
