I went to see “The Omen” remake this past Tuesday and was kind of mixed on it.It works really well if you haven’t seen the original one, but I found many flaws, though the average viewer would probably beg to differ or not know what I am talking about.First off, it is the sound effects used in the film:When Robert Thorn and Jennings travel to Meggido to find out about Damien’s origins, we hear the Muslim call to prayer that was used in the intro to “The Exorcist”.
Then during Damien’s party there are a bunch of kids chasing each other around. For some reason, the makers of this film chose to use the same sound effects that were in films like “The Exorcist”, “True Grit”, “Exorcist II: The Heretic”, to name a few that have the same annoying little kid screaming while saying, “Scottie Scottie!!” and “I’ll get you!”.
Visually, the film is dark and dreary most of the time, and I was disappointed that there was no “Ave Satani” theme in the mix.I would have been happier if a couple who the same age as Robert and Kathy Thorn from the original had been cast, rather than a couple who have a long way to go before the even reach the age of 40.It would have made it seem that they had been waiting forever to even have a child like it did in the 1976 version.
Then there is Mrs. Baylock who was played perfectly in 1976 by Billie Whitelaw. The minute I saw her the first time, I was instantly nervous.Mia Farrow’s portrayal seemed almost out of place.THEN there is the subject of DAMIEN….in this 2006 remake, Damien seems to already KNOW that he is evil, unlike the Damien of yesteryear who clearly seemed like he hadn’t a clue of what was unfolding around him.
