Just noticed… the Original Theatrical disc has an “evil-to-good-Karras CGI morph” right before he jumps out the window. All releases before the 25th Anniversary had just a simple cut between the two faces.

One thing (out of many) I do really enjoy about this BR release is the color of the opening/end titles, they're actually red. A bright red. TVYNS's titles are pinkish-red in comparison!
Dear Mother of God, Ceru! Don't you know using the word CGI on here can get you into hot water? Just kidding … I noticed the change, but dare not to mention it after my bloody spiderwalk debate!
The colors are wonderful and thank God for Owen Roizman!

ParticipantI eagerly ripped open my copy when I received it on Oct 5th. Watched the theatrical cut that night. I made no adjustments to my Sony Bravia nor to my Blu-ray settings. It was stunningly beautiful, the color rich and the sound terrifying. However, I was disappointed to see that during the visit to Karras's mother's apartment (and only that scene) the blacks and dark parts of the scene were full of “static” or scratches. Could this be my TV or Blu-ray? Did anyone else have this issue? It was only noticeable in that scene. It's a dark scene in general, but I was shocked at the grainy fuzziness of it compared to the stunning clarity of the rest of the film. I'm going to watch EDC to see if it's also there. Another questionable moment was after Regan does her acrobatics on the bed and the two doctors arrive to sedate her, there's an insert shot of them coming at her with the needle. The scene is clear and colorful and then suddenly the close up of the doctors is dingy and orangeish, very noticeable. Again, is it just me? Overall though, a wonderful improvement. I'll never watch this film another way (and why would I?) Also, Regan's demonic eyes have never glowed more malevolently before! Thumbs up from me except for the apartment scene and insert shot of the doctors giving Regan an injection.

FB, the Blu-Ray book states that the spiderwalk scene “has been digitally enhanced from its original incarnation to speed up Regan's movements and add in a mouthful of blood”. Maybe the scene has been filmed with a bloody mouth that was later CGI-enhanced. In the “Great Spiderwalk Debate”, maybe everybody was right.

ParticipantHi Lane,
Welcome to the Captain's site!
I have not noticed much differences on the scenes you mention other than the fact that the lighting was intentionally low in those scenes. Original lighting and film grain are often elements that cannot be altered through digital processing. An original 35mm film archive was used for the digital transfer and we have to remember that the film was shot almost 40 years ago. While grain is prevalent, it is something that cannot be eliminated without losing contrasting edges or creating a feathered, soft-glow appearance much akin to watching many of those close-up shots of Hollywood actresses in the old B&W classics; i.e., Bette Davis, Joan Crawford, Gloria Swanson, etc. At 1080p that would create a dissapointing BR.
There are instances in certain films where some scenes just get bypassed altogether. For instance, if you've watched An American Werewolf in London on BR, you'll notice the dramatic differences in the beginning on the moors; when David is talking to the doctor right before he leaves the hospital; and other scenes. Somehow, they didn't make it through the digital processing equipment.
As far as Regan's eyes, I brought it up on the original posting and I'm glad to see another person who noticed that the demon's eyes are now “eye-popping” (pun intended).

I believe this should be a continuing debate indeed, bursyl. I don't believe many people will want to think that CGI was implored, but the book as you stated is correct.
Let me test this one more time in the new post, “The Great Spiderwalk Debate.” Thanks for the title and the information!

ParticipantIt had to be sped up. The blood may have been enhanced looking at the making of I would guess it wasn’t.

ParticipantIt's definitely faster moving on the Blu-ray.

KeymasterThe blu-ray book book explains that the spiderwalk was sped up and digital blood was added to enhance the blood that was already there. I guess, better 'dripping'?
The things we discuss here sure do make for some strange sentences sometimes

It's the only site I know of where we talk about a crucifix vaginal stabbing, that's for sure.

ParticipantWatched the original version last night. It looks amazing, albeit a few overly grainy/noisy scenes and some inconsistent contrast levels, but I was surprised how great some of the darkest scenes look (attic, pub) as if they were filmed yesterday. The scenes in Iraq are definitely the best, though, the detail is stunning. I didn't mind the colour timing at all either… in fact… dare I say I even prefer it over the 1997 DVD!!
As for the new features, I'll be honest and say I was a little disappointed. All the BTS footage is fantastic and I'm so happy to have seen it, but I felt it needed to go for at least another 30 mins. There was too much left out, and it focused a bit too much on Linda. They also seemed to wimp out on showing some of the tougher moments on set that were talked about in the Fear of God.
But hopefully they won't hold anything back for a 40th anniversary!

KeymasterI agree, Justin. I'm in the middle of drafting a post for the main page of CH.com about how disappointed I am in the Blu-ray's documentaries, despite how wonderful the release is. Trickier to construct than I first thought.

ParticipantYep. I wasn't blown away by them, when I feel I should have been. Not that I don't appreciate their efforts, it's just I could have taken a couple more hours worth of the behind the scenes footage quite easily. Even without any commentary.
But to be fair, we are all a bit fanatical here. I suspect it would be asking a lot to be able to provide something new and interesting enough to make our jaws drop

Damn I need a spell checker!

ParticipantI say the draw a commitee from this board, let us wade into the vaults, and let us make the damn extras. We can even quiz blatty and Friedkin while watching the movie and dig a good commentary out of them. THen we'll get another commentary with Blair, Burstyn and Van Sydow for a second commentary track. THen yet another with Dietz, Dick Smith and Rick Baker!
Then well make it so you can choose what scenes are left in or taken out. You can have the tongue spider-walk. The bloody one or none at all. Original ending or the Casablanca ending. The possibilities are huge.
Â
Someone get WB and make it happen for the 40th! I'll work for peanuts!
