ParticipantI just recently got finished reading “The Exorcist” for the umpteen time and the one part of the book I cannot fathom is how Regan made plaster dildoes and attached them to the statue of Christ in the Church without being seen. I remember one night Chris heard Regan downstairs in the kitchen and was glad that Regan was getting her appetite back but I was wondering if in actuality Regan was on her way to the church or coming back after desecrating the statues? Can anybody shed light on this subject because I can't fathom a 12 year old walking in the night with a plaster dildo in hand to stick on the statue of Christ without being seen by somebody?

ParticipantJust a guess, of course. Regan may already have been capable of increased motor skills and did the desecrations in a trance-like, “speeded-up” state. She probably took the stuff to the church in a backpack, which would not look suspicious for a presumed twelve year old student. After a few weeks of “innocent” observation, Regan could have familiarized herself with comings and goings in the church – then she found an opportunity and did a rush-job desecration. She was just very lucky not to have been discovered.

ParticipantI don't really think you have to have an explanation about this as it lends an air of sinister mystery to the story as far as I'm concerned. Actually I remember when I saw it back in '74, my 17 year old mind just thought that the devil had done it and didn't really take it any further. That's probably an unsatisfactory or even silly answer today for some but I don't think any explanation that has Regan running around at night doing the task holds much weight either.

The difference is that the case of Regan herself doing the desecrations, is not mere conjecture. Blatty's story nearly confirms it. Kinderman scrapes paint off one of Regan's scultpures, labs it, and the lab confirms that Regan's paint matches the paint used in the church desecrations. Regan, under the demon's influence, is the obvious culprit. Moreover, the blasphemous altar card found in the church was typed on the MacNeils' typewriter – another pointer to Regan. That Regan secretively desecrated the church is not an imaginative scenario. It's what Blatty, through Kinderman's research, states.
