ParticipantWell, I just finished inspecting and keeping an eye out for things and I didn’t come up with much, in fact many people probably already know them.. But hey:
Karras is visiting his mother and as soon as he gets in he puts his collar down on its side, but right after this the camera zooms into a picture on the dresser he has set it down on, during this shot the collar is flat on its back. The camera goes back to Karras looking at the picture on the dresser and the collar is back the way he set it.. An obvious one =P
And speeaaking of product placement, is that a Nivea bottle behind Regan in the bathtub? Just a thought haha.
THIS is one I always notice and it bugs me a little. The scene where Karras is recording Regans/The demons voice speaking in reversed english, you can clearly see where the makeup ends on her face and her ears are the normal pigment of her skin.. Nothing major.

I noticed in this clip you can no longer see the wires levitating Linda…
Justin, I thought I was wrong and didn’t mention it, but I do believe it now that you’ve come on board with your comment. When the last edition of The Wizard of Oz came out, they showed how they removed elements like the wire holding the Cowardly Lion’s tail. It was pretty tedious for that film considering the length of time we see that character. I’m assuming WB followed the same route with The Exorcist for the short levitation scene.
I’ll let you know after tomorrow. I’m really curious about the ripped makeup on Eileen’s face during the vomiting scene when Regan pukes on Fr. Merrin’s purple stole. Hopefully someone did a readjustment with the hair to cover the mistake or did some kind of blending technique.

dsea, what's a “power frame?” “Please thrill me with your acumen.” 🙂
The cigarette scene is a major continuity blunder. It happens in the park when Chris meets up with Fr. Karras. She asks him: “Do you have a cigarette, father?” He obliges with the one smoke.
After a few puffs she throws it on the ground and does a “twist-stomp” to extinguish it (we only see this from the waist up view, but know what's clearly happening). Next shot, she starts asking questions about exorcism and the cigarette and its smoke reappears. The weed is still lit while she adjusts her sunglasses. She didn't ask for a second one. She simply had that “bottomless barrel of popcorn” just in a cigarette form. Once you notice it, it's something you seem to focus on and it can be annoying. [Update this on HD please, Billy Friedkin!]
I can't recall what the script calls for (at least not in the original marked-up one that I have).
It's just clearly a continuity issue … like the ping-pong ball that's under the paddle, disappears, and reappears. This is in the basement scene with Regan, Chris, and the Ouija board.
Chris' collar keeps going from 'popped' to unpopped in that scene =P

ParticipantAnyone post this yet? Chris wakes up and finds Regan in bed with her, then goes to investigate the noises in the attic. While Chris is gone, Regan’s nightgown changes from blue:

to pink:

This pink gown looks like the same one she was wearing during the “you can bring Mr. Dennings” conversation. By the way, this closeup may very well be my favorite shot in the whole film. Very creepy, I can’t even look at it for very long. And it says so much: Regan is a wake and can hear the sounds. She’s aware of them but isn’t talking about them (in the finished film at least; I know about the book and the possible deleted scene). And what is she looking at so intently, so fearfully? Who/what does she see? She seems to be in a trance. Enthralled, in the original sense of the word…
In the 1973 version, we hear one of the rasping sounds during this closeup. But we don’t hear it in the 2000 version (whatever it’s called now), which I think is a mistake. Hearing it during this closeup shows that she’s awake, aware of the sounds, and obviously scared to death by them.

ParticipantI believe that shot was taken from a deleted scene where Regan hears the noises coming from the attic, and complains to Chris about it in the study. The scene would have followed the “you can bring Mr. Dennings” conversation, which is why she is wearing the same nightgown.

Oh, how I hope one day we'll get to see those scenes…

ParticipantAlso, notice the pillow. We know it's the different scene we think it is about Dennings. I haven't checked it out on the BR, but it could have come from the party scene ending, too. It's definitely different.

ParticipantShe's wearing a cream coloured nightgown at the end of the party scene, so it can't be from there. The patterned pillow (or whatever it is) I can't spot anywhere in the film, not even the Burke/birthday discussion.

ParticipantHmmm … I have no clue unless it came from one of the outtakes like the one where we see Regan coming into Chris' den/office. The only picture I remember is a black-and-white though.

ParticipantThe way it was written for the film makes it all the more confusing.
In the novel the missing “funny noises” scene follows directly after the Burke/birthday discussion. Blatty doesn't mention Regan lying awake listening to the noises, just that she goes down to the study. After that, Chris lets Regan sleep in her bed and goes up to into the attic. When she comes back down she puts Regan back in her own room.
In the film, the “funny noises” scene has been removed and the attic scene pushed back to when Regan complains of her bed shaking. Then we have this quick shot of Regan in between that comes from the earlier deleted scene where the attic scene should have followed.
My guess is that there was an extra part written and filmed after Chris says good night to Regan that shows her lying awake listening to the noises (which is where this random shot of Regan spliced into the attic scene comes from), then it cut to Chris in the study and Regan coming down to complain of the noises. But that still doesn't explain the patterned object and what looks to be white pillows, when they should be blue like during the Burke/birthday discussion. Maybe it's simply a continuity error (now within another continuity error).
Surely there must be some script or record of these missing scenes somewhere…?

ParticipantAnd, like you Justin, I would love to see all the cutting room floor material with or without sound. Maybe one day!

I don't think so, Ju. In the novel, after Regan complains about the noises, Chris takes her up to her own bedroom. You can see a still of Linda lying on Chris' bed in the same position as that quick shot, so I don't think that was filmed while Regan was in her room.ÂÂ

ParticipantSof,
It can make some sense from a script perspective. Remember that Blatty wrote an original script that Friedkin rejected and sent Blatty back to the drawing board. We have to separate the novel from the film.

Hmmm … I don't get the tie in, but I'm sure you do. What I see is yet another entirely different scene (the first one above that you posted) taken in Chris's bedroom of Regan lying on different bed sheets and dressed in a different nightgown. This is probably the “aha” you were referring to because it's definitely in Chris's bedroom and this probably explains that is actually the scene from the study where Rags complains of funny noises. Right?
If not, can you tie it together for me? Like I said, I'm sure you understand what I'm not getting. Which only leads me to the, “Dear God, WB, release ALL the cutting room floor material just like you did for the Washington sightseeing bit … we don't care about sound!”
