The Oscar-winning screenwriter of THE EXORCIST is suing Warner Brothers bosses amid allegations of unpaid profits.

Author William Peter Blatty, who wrote the book the 1973 horror film was based on, claims studio executives have refused to allow him access to inspect their accounting books to determine the movie’s total gross.

Their actions have prompted Blatty to believe he has been cheated out of profits and he filed suit in a U.S. federal court on Friday (03Sep10), asking a judge to force Warner Bros. to show him their records.

Blatty’s lawyer, Eric George, insists The Exorcist film grossed more than $400 million (£266.7 million) at the global box office and he is helping the writer fight for unspecified damages, reports TMZ.com.

Honestly Justin, I wouldn’t pay too much attention to what TMZ.com says…They are kind of like the “National Enquirer” of the internet!!

Yeah I know, I loathe TMZ, but this has been reported elsewhere too. It’s also not the first time Blatty has gone through this so it’s not an unbelievable story.

Well, I think Blatty is a genius, and if Warner Bros hasn’t paid up, then he SHOULD sue them for everything he can get!!

Oooh, looks like it’s time for WB to cook the books (if they haven’t already years ago).

    Good luck, Blatty! 🙂

I think a loophole will be revealed where Blatty will continue to get residual checks of a certain price, regardless how much any subsequent releases of The Exorcist earn.

Law suits like this prevent a remake with his blessing, or the TV mini series he’s written, from being developed further– which is a shame.

If only it were more cut-and-dry.

That’s true, Cap. I’m sure that WB is going to drag this out long enough until Blatty passes away. Perhaps his heirs will continue to pursue it.
