A man named Rob Ager has a very thought provoking analysis of the exorcist.
I'll not recap his work here and let you judge it for yourselves.
Im very interested in what you all think about it.
Im a very large fan of the exorcist and I salute you all for your interest in it.
if this topic has been covered before a link to the original post would also be appreciated.
thank you

ParticipantIt has been posted here before. personally I think it's an interesting viewpoint but ultimately completely baseless.
Mr Ager has too much time on his hands 😉

completely baseless?
So right after her sexually assaulting herself and her mother AND using burke denning's voice the entire burke dennings/ sexuall abuse angle is baseless?
Blatty has said that he talked to real psychiatrists to come up with reagan's symptoms. Rob Ager claims to be a psychiatrist and even offers a book he wrote on psychology from his website.
Im disappointed I took the time to sign up and the only response I got was “completely baseless”

KeymasterI find Rob's take on it very enlightening, and I like that encourages the viewer to engage beyond what (unfortunately) most viewers see as a monster movie.
I'm sorry you are disappointed in the lack of response — these are brand new message forums with some old threads from old software left in tact. We discussed this thoroughly in 2007. I will endeavour to find it on my server and *bump* it because the discussion was very interesting.
I personally prefer to take The Exorcist on face value – that is, the demon Pazuzu entered Regan and cased her to behave the way she did. Paranormal, spiritual, and horrific. But that's just me.

Participantyeah if you could find that thread id be interested in reading it.
ive been lurking here for a few years but finally got bored or caffeinated enough to sign up.
a few friends of mine and myself endlessly ponder the exorcist 1 and 3.
i thought mr.ager’s ideas were pretty groundbreaking considering how many times ive seen the films and never made those connections.

ParticipantYes, we all had quite a discussion regarding this article.
Ager offers some intriguing thoughts about The Exorcist and other films. However, I don’t see his analysis too beneficial because he targets this film as a sexual abuse case only. It’s overkill. Even Ager admits, “Some of these sexual abuse interpretations I have offered may seem like clutching at straws, but they do make sense of seemingly random parts of the story.” It is “clutching at straws” in my opinion and I don’t see “the even darker underbelly” of the plot from Ager’s viewpoint.
