I wish The Exorcist novel could be filmed as a mini series, but there’s no point in remaking the movie if it’s going to have the same running time of 2 hours.

Wow. I can’t help but feel partially responsible for getting the ball rolling on this one. On September 16th I asked Captain Howdy if there was talk of a remake, and a lttle more than a month later, Linda Blair is talking about it and here’s the petition dead set against it. I can’t sign it. Sorry guys. It’s just too much fun watching all of this unfold. Let me leave all of you with this: We all know that a theatrical remake has a snowball’s chance in hell of being any good. That being said, if it does see the light of day, it will make the original look even better. My signature means nothing, and neither does any of yours because if a movie studio sees a chance at making some serious coin, they will, no matter what. Soooooo…. who will be cast as Karras?

Of course a remake will never be as good as the original and I dont think that anyone expects it to be, that being said however I dont see a real problem with a remake as long as it is approached with intelligence and all effort is made to make something psychologically disturbing of and of real quality.
The only problem i could see with a modern remake would be that they would go overkill on the special effects and computer generated images in an effort to make the film appeal to modern youth which would be a big mistake. If they could somehow remake it in an old school cult kind of way it would be cool.

PS If they are going to do it then I think that Linda Blair should make an appearance in the film even if just a small part or maybe they could even slightly change the plot and make the possessed girl Regan’s daughter, now that would be quite interesting as it would directly continue from the original film some 35 years later.

I can understand people not bothered by a remake happening. Even I’m a little intrigued and would find it very interesting watching it unfold. But so many things add up to a remake being POINTLESS that I just can’t help but feel it’s a waste of time and energy. The original is as good today as it was over 30 years ago, right there on your DVD shelves ready to watch.

Kevin, I think that the fact any movie studio is happy to overlook the artesty and integrity of a classic film for the sake of making coin is THE POINT of our petition. If you’re willing to join the sheep and just give in, you’re more than welcome. One day they’ll remake THE GODFATHER, CASABLANCA and JAWS and the essence of film will die all together.

An Exorcist remake will be horrible. My son will watch it one day with his friends and will forever think “That Exorcist film is pretty crap, I don’t get what my Dad saw in it…” Then I’ll make him watch the original – but it won’t matter. He would have been tainted with the remake version. He’ll know what’s coming. He’ll know about the priest that dies, the girl who survives, etc. And it will no longer have the same impact. Not for generations to come.

That’s the saddest part. I hate that thought. So I started a petition. At least I tried; I can live with that.

I share those feelings, Buda… and while I would be distraught, I, too, would be very interested to see what they would do with a remake. And you just KNOW CaptainHowdy.com would be covering every single detail for Exorcist fans, albeit though gritting teeth. ;)

Not all remakes are hopeless. The Hills Have Eyes is my personal favourite, Halloween wasn’t great, but it’s still very interesting. Pointless? Sure, but damned if I’m not curious! Imagine what it COULD be? If it was done with respect but stood on its own, perhaps CGI as a tool (but not overwhelming), where it isn’t really noticed, bringing back a feeling of genuine horror to a landscape of predictable films? Anyway, I could always dream..
Can’t bring myself to sign, but no matter what happens or doesn’t happen, the only thing that would truly bother me (and the only way to touch the original) is if they somehow banned it and started destroying all copies of it..unlikely.

Cap, I get what your’e saying, and I respect it. I am curious as well, But the reason I think a remake would be O.K. Is as long as they hand the project over to somebody (meaning director) with brains. then icould have a chance to be decent. Whoever is chosen to direct a remake (if it happens) has to be a fan of the original. You don’t hand this type of project to just anybody. I still say that there is stuff that is in the novel that can be shown on screen that wasn’t in the original.

I somewhat agree, Justin. They have to draw the line somewhere. While horror film remakes continue to turn a profit, however, they will continue to make them, be they butchered hacks or respectable versions.

Why are people so opposed to remakes? The Exorcist stands alone as the best horror movie ever – the original that is…didn’t care for the Version You Never…
Both The Beginning and Dominion were horrible and should have stayed in the vaults as far as I am concerned…my point is…
Did any other film made after the original affect it’s staying power?
    No.
It still rocks and always will…and if a remake should be made it will only bring more attention to the original as it’s audience will seek it out to compare it.
    So.
Bring on a remake! Bring on another attempt to overshadow the original – it will never be done.

Shakingman, I can’t believe that anyone who watches an absolutely pathetic remake would bother to watch the original. I mean, why would they? And even if they did – the story would be ruined for them already. Like I said earlier:

It looks like the petition stalled at 200 signatures. What a shame.

You know you also have to blame the idiotic movie going public as well. It’s they that are buying the tickets and keeping the remakers and re-imagining hacks in business.

I am not COMPLETELY opposed to a remake. The original IS a classic, but that does NOT mean that it is perfect. It never was. Both Friedkin and Blatty have stated this. The fact is that an even MORE FAITHFUL version of the novel would be welcome. “The Exorcist” novel has ALWAYS been a little better than “The Exorcist” movie. Why?
Well, it has a little more heart and soul. It’s also more frightening because of the portrayal of the Demon. In the novel the Demon had a lot more dialogue, more character development, it’s hideous, mocking evil was MUCH stronger. A painfully thin, redish-blonde haired little freckled girl with braces, strapped to a bed, bruised, scratched, emitting all kinds of bodily wastes, sunken, glinting eyes and a croaking voice that oozes menace, spouting completely vicious mind game statements is a little more frightening to me than the (admittedly effective) “monster on the bed” of the movie. Linda Blair NEVER seemed to be “wasting away” and the make-up (in daylight scenes) was a little too much. Still, I’m not complaining…just commenting. The violent tortures the child goes through were definately toned-down for the movie and considering today’s young audiences taste for “torture” (see “SAW”)these scenes could finally be brought to the screen for a totally brutalizing effect. All of this can be presented with taste (as was the novel), so I don’t want to hear anybody tell me I’m weird for wanting the novel’s hard edge to be presented intact this time. A good 150 minute version of the novel, expertly presented is what I’m hoping for. Also, Regan should be played by an unknown, otherwise it’s just an actress in make-up. Julianne Moore would make a
great Chris, she’s an awesome actress! Hey, Max is old enough to play Merrin without make-up, now! Just kidding….
